Japan’s Declining Newspaper Industry and the Oshigami Problem

Japanese newspapers are losing readers very quickly.
In Europe and the United States, many newspaper companies have moved from printed newspapers to the Internet. This change has helped some of them build a more stable business. Japanese newspaper companies, however, have been slower to make this change.
One reason is Japan’s traditional newspaper delivery system. For many years, newspaper companies grew by using local newspaper shops to deliver printed newspapers directly to people’s homes. Because this system was very important to their business, it has been difficult for them to move away from printed newspapers.
